Some recent stuff, some "old" stuff, and some birthday stuff for Meiko. (I was actually going to do this a Meiko-only update, but then I remembered I had a backlog of other stuff to post, and... yeaaah.)

I was absolutely sick of seeing this song on the ranking until A CERTAIN SOMEONE in chan made me pay attention to the lyrics and now I completely love it. ._. ANYWAY, if you click on anything in this post, make it this video because holy crap Vivienne. At first it takes you a couple of seconds to realize it's her and not Len singing and once the song gets going it's really hard to do anything but go *___* at it. Pitch/emotion/everything is perfect and I could loop it for hours without getting tired.

SHIGOTOSHITE-P FUCK YEAH. \o/ A lovely, melancholy song about a girl waiting for someone by the sea. Meiko's tuning is fantastic, as always, and the piano line (HEY STEL HEY) is beautiful. If this song doesn't get you even a little bit ;_; you have no heart.

Wheee songs. )

Huge post is huuuuge. I picked a bunch of my favorite Halloween-themed/scary songs, but since almost all of them have different versions/videos, I ended up with nearly 30 videos under the cut, oops. I also included Youtube mirrors with subs for everything I could, because the lyrics are a great part of what makes these songs so awesome. Also please let me know if there are any broken links or whatever because hahaha SO MANY LINKS. ;;d

Introducing: MAI HUSBANDO. (。・ω・。)ノ The comm is now active enough that I can shameless and guiltlessly dedicate a whole post to my favorite male nicosinger. :'D

Clear started his nicosinging career back in July '08 and he's currently one of the most well-known singers in the world of Vocaloid covers. As his name would indicate, he has a very clear, easy on the ears voice, and... while he is obviously aware of the size of his fanbase and loves to play up the wai wai bishie act, he never overdoes it like other singers out there.

One of those fandubs that rank higher than the original in the Nicosound listings. A fantastic song that showcases all aspects of Clear's singing, from his (now vanishing) vibrato to his shameless bishounen act. Incidentally, before the tags were cleaned up, there was one called "the 2:54 incident" attributed to his sexy おいで ("come here") at that exact moment in the song. Watch the video only to see the comments explode with laughter, squealing and "I'M COMING"s when it happens. :'D

More Pantsu Ouji over here. )

PS: Stelas is shunned for linking Sweet Sweet Cendrillon Drug a couple of posts ago before I could get to it myself, but you should totally check it out too, if you haven't. :|d

Yeah, I just don't know what half the entries this week are on. To make up for it, there sure are a lot of them, though. Oh yeah, since it's come up - these aren't necessarily completely new songs, they're just whatever Nicovideo's had it's eye on recently. So there y'go. Again, if a video's tagged MMD, then it features a silly singing robots video using MikuMikuDance, the animation package. If it's marked Typographic, then it's got floating text crap by that one guy I'm getting just a little bit tired of.

In other news we are pretty much doomed; some horrible people who will go unnamed may have started something terrifying. It is left as an exercise to the reader to figure out who might be who.

... I wonder if I should add them as maintainers?

You lucky people get two songs above the cut because there's so damn many this week. We stride the line solidly between a collection of complete what-the-hell, and a massive amount of solid, awesome tracks. In short, Japan loves us. As ever, corrections to my translations (especially fandubber names, I am terrible at learning them) are welcomed.

【ニコニコ動画】【ミクリンレンルカハク】飛べない烏と迷い犬 SPEdition【オリジナル・MMDPV

(The Crow Who Could Not Fly And The Stray Dog -Special Edition-, Miku + Haku + Len + Rin + Luka, THRASH METAAAAAAAAAL, MMD)
This is the first of two - yes, two - videos featuring practically the entire group of vocaloids (Gumi and Gakupo clearly don't count, and Kaito's busy doing his own emo videos) rocking out with instruments via MMD Band Edition to a pair of surprisingly good tracks. If nothing else, watch it for the amazing video.

(Dischotheque, Miku, Pop/Jazz)
An astounding video, made up of SHAFT-style papercraft animations and strange cuts of material, encompasses this smooth track with fantastic singing robotting. Discotheque clearly isn't it's real name, but without understanding wtf that katakana is on, it stays.

The best of the rest. )

Also, since we never explicitly mentioned: yes, posting is absolutely public. Go for it.

I return from Atlanta, which was alternately blisteringly hot and frighteningly rainy, only to find that in my absence singing robotry has continued apace. You can now find us on IRC at irc.lunarnet.org, #stupidsingingrobots, should you be so inclined, and by the by Floor is terrible people.

There has also been a ton of new crap on Nicovideo, of course, and while I'm too tired to go through most of it, here are some of the more recent ones. Some of it isn't even Miku, and even less if you count fandubs. PS: I am a terrible translator and usually leave fandubbers names out. If you want me to add them TELL ME WHO THEY ARE.

So, without further ado, barring the sound of quiet sobbing in the corner, the music.

(Bright World, Miku, Rock/Pop)
Easily my favorite of this update, from the same artist as Jigsaw comes another fantastic soft rock Miku track. Top-class work from the dude, and it's just as good as his last work.

Since I keep forgetting to crosspost.

It's that time again - a smattering of new tracks from the Nicovideo top 100 this past week. If you're new the comm and not sure how to play these, you can find links both for signing up for Nicovideo and for ripping files from it in our profile. The IRC channel, as mentioned, is #stupidsingingrobots on irc.lunarnet.org 6667. If you're wondering what you're missing by not being in there, well, here's a smattering of recent examples, names withheld to protect the not-so-innocent.

"so I found a video last night where someone decided it would be a good idea to have Miku sing One-Winged Angel"
"awww it's an actual len song where he doesn't die, though the picture does imply him freezing to death in a cave"
"dammit why is no one here when I found a Gumi song called Sexcalibur"
"kaito and len brofisting"
"yaranaika magnet is best magnet"
"I'd like to note that I found a Project Diva video of Meiko singing about how she could get Kaito off her mind if she just, you know, had a chance to step on him in stiletto heels"

So there you go.

【ニコニコ動画】初音ミク・巡音ルカ・寒音ジミ・その他オリジナル曲 「BEAT!」

(BEAT!, Miku + Luka, Highly Adorable Pop/Rock)
From the same album as Toy Box, this is easily my favorite of the update - a completely adorable rock tune with a habit of falling away into soft trance-esque beats, BEAT! is a wonderfully listenable track which features half the other Vocaloids on backing.

Because this is clearly the best way to deal with insomnia. I hate you bodyyyyy.

So, a quick intro for newbies! GUMI also known as Megpoid is Internet's newest Vocaloid (these are the guys responsible for Gakupo). Her voice was provided by Nakajima Megumi, who is famous for voicing Ranka Lee in Macross Frontier. Her character design/color scheme is also suspiciously similar to Ranka's, which has gained her the nickname "Rankaloid" (also, her character item are carrots, ololol).

You'd think that with such an amazing voice and... pre-existing fandom behind her GUMI would be more popular, but for some mysterious reason, producers don't seem to work with her much, which is really a shame, but oh well. We'll just have to wait for someone to make a totally amazing song for her to really get the attention she deserves.

Brought to you by Samfree (also responsible for LukaLuka★Night Fever), this was the first big hit Gumi had when she was released in June. It isn't anything extraordinary, but it is terribly catchy and fun. I like to call it "Gumi's DDR song." :Dd

Hello, new people! Somehow we have gained about six people since I last checked, about four of which are completely new to me and didn't even need to be brutally coerced into joining. The fact that people are actively of their own free will adding themselves to our ranting descent into a love/hate relationship with moe moe singing robots both gives me solace that we are not alone and also terrifies me.

This is, by the way, still not a post about Gumi. SUCK IT, MOPTOP.

But yeah, like the post says, those two MyLists are super useful for people who want to start getting to know old classics and the like, though a lot of the videos are just super obscure crappy stuff and old parodies. So I'd recommend just opening the video and the MyLists in separate tabs and just check out the ones that ping you.

Huke’s popular character Black Rock Shooter, a reimagined Hatsune Miku with guns, has been announced as receiving a music video anime by Haruhi director Yamakan’s Ordet production studio; however, it now transpires that this is actually a pilot for a full anime adaptation.

My next post was going to be all about the wonders of MikuMikuDance - the animation program primarily involving Stupid Singing Robots that Japanese people use to make a collection of batshitinsane videos. However, right as I was planning to do this some kind of MMD competition dropped and there's suddenly a ton of both awesome MMD song videos and awesome MMD ... moron singing robots videos. So I'm going to split them - if a song is tagged MMD in this post then you should watch it for the video at least, as some of the work that people put into their animations is absolutely astonishing. More information on the whole thing (together with non-song, older or plain hilarious videos) next update.

Since we somehow hit 100 tags already we're going to stop tagging individual songs unless they come up more than once or are particular favorites because otherwise we'll reach like a billion tags and Livejournal will bomb us off the site. Also, this way we can have more stupid tags. Instead the 'general linkdump of songs' will be represented by the amazingly erudite and well-thought out 'linkdump' tag.

Also copying over my posts. Laazy.

Yes, yes, I know I said the next update would be GUMI-licious, but I'd totally forgotten about Miku's birthday and... well.

NEXT UPDATE, FOR SURE. In the meantime, I present you a selection of Miku classics from the past two years! Though no covers or remixes because otherwise this post would get even more huge. I'll just have to give each of these songs a separate post in the future, I guess.

Obviously. This is Miku's anthem, catchy to the point of infectiousness, and also one of those songs that will never, ever leave the weekly ranking. Somehow, I can't bring myself to mind.

Project DIVA PV ... Okay so maybe I lied about not linking other stuff. This is here only because the choreography is absolutely adorable. And I kind of know it already, just by watching it too many times.

First, stuff I've grabbed from the past few weeks' rankings!

Fffff this song. Some of the comments in this video are "Meiko Master" and I can't help but agree. IT TAKES A LOT OF SKILL TO GET MEIKO TO SOUND GOOD and ShigotoshiteP manages it amazingly (there were two producers in this, one for each Vocaloid). Luka is wonderful, too, and the song itself is a gorgeous earworm that I could have on loop for hours.

An amazing Piapro collaboration. Delicious Luka Engrish + kickass guitar + really pretty PV = YES. Too bad only one singer has actually covered this, because while her pronunciation is good, her singing is... not quite to my taste. :|a I'LL JUST HAVE TO KEEP ON THE LOOKOUT.

Delightful MeikoxKaito duet of the "HOLY SHIT SOMEONE MADE THEM SOUND REALLY GOOD" kind. And now that I'm looking at it, ha ha, ShigotoshiteP strikes back, no wonder. I'm heading straight to his My List after I'm done with this post because damn this guy is good at working with Vocaloid 1. Oh rofl, he's also responsible for Tsugai Kogarashi, I am officially A Fan.

Now, for the fancovers!

This is a really awesome cover for a really awesome song. Vivian's voice has improved a lot recently (not that it was ever bad, mind you), and she hits all of Rin's high notes here with no effort whatsoever.

Stelas pimped this before! And while I'm not exactly Kushi's biggest fan, her cover of this song is really really great. Kodoku No Hate seems to be one of those songs that all male singers and their fathers want to cover, so finding an actual good female version amongst an ocean of testosterone is really refreshing. ♥

NTS: Next update must contain at least ONE Gumi song, fffft. /o\

Hahah, oh, Magnet. I almost can't believe I'm doing this for my first song post.

Okay, so a bit of backstory! A couple of months ago when I first seriously got into the fandom, I started following the Weekly Vocaloid Ranking! And the first time I watched it, this song was in the first spot. It's now fallen to the 10ths/20ths, but it's one of Those Songs that will take forever to get kicked out of the countdown. I liked the song a lot, but after seeing it on the chart week after week and hearing over fifty covers in different styles by different people it... kind of gets a bit old. IN FACT, I KIND OF STARTED LOATHING THE SONG A BIT.

But! Nicodouga is full of amazingly talented people and some of them have made really amazing covers! THIS POST IS ALL ABOUT THOSE. The few versions of Magnet (plus a couple of extras) I actually enjoy and don't make me want to kick puppies. BUT FIRST, LET'S LISTEN TO THE ORIGINAL, SHALL WE?

The producer of the song is Minato/RyuuseiP (aka Nicosinger: Tolie), well-known for other great hits such as SPICE! and RIP=RELEASE. It's a nice ballad by Miku and Luka, very catchy, and kind of terribly cheesy. BUT SINCE IT WORKS REALLY WELL FOR YURI/YAOI SITUATIONS... well, we'll get into that in a bit.
